China Program Report 2003

Overview

The Badi Foundation was established in Macau in 1990 as an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization. In its initial work in China, Badi Foundation has been involved in various fields including education, health and the environment.

Since 1996, the Badi Foundation has established social development projects in Shaanxi, Gansu and Yunnan Provinces and trained more than 1,850 participants, facilitators and leaders from more than 200 villages in seven counties. Our projects reached thousands of others through participants’ sharing of the knowledge gained with friends, neighbors and colleagues.

We learned how to train and work with locals as facilitators in 2002. In 2003 we focused on training and guiding local facilitators through the basic course and on expanding the number of participants taking that course. To reach our long-term goal of achieving self-sustainability, it is necessary to train a sufficient number of local participants to become facilitators so that they, in turn, can carry forward the project.

When SARS hit the country our projects came to a halt from April to mid-July. However, this period provided the Foundation with an opportunity to concentrate on training its new local staff members.

Despite SARS, there was a beehive of activity during the second half of the year. We completed those activities that had been delayed and much more. By December, our efforts started to bear fruit when 22 local facilitators reached out to their friends and neighbors in the villages. They were able not only to facilitate the program, but to resolve challenges they encountered.
