The Badi Foundation was established in Macau in 1990, where it is registered as a non-profit charitable organization.  The foundation established a representative office in Beijing, registered under the State Administration for Industry and Commerce of the People’s Republic of China since 1997 (registration number 110000400072535), that is audited according to the laws of China.

The Badi Foundation and Chinese Association for NGO Cooperation (CANGO) entered into a three-year special cooperation agreement on July 20, 2011.  The agreement was signed by CANGO Secretary-General and Vice Director Mr. Huang Haoming and Badi Foundation Chief Representative Mrs. Shareen Farhad.  Under this agreement, CANGO and the Badi Foundation will collaborate to organize capacity building trainings and seminars, participate in high level meetings and share experiences related to the development of non-governmental development organizations in China.

The Badi Foundation has been working to contribute to balanced and sustainable development in China since 1990, in collaboration with a variety of governmental and non-governmental agencies.  The Badi Foundation’s programs focus on releasing the potential of individuals and institutions in China to advance their own communities, with a particular emphasis on women and youth living in rural areas. CANGO is a non-profit membership organization that was founded in 1992 and registered with the Ministry of Civil Affairs in 1993.  CANGO has widely cooperated and interacted with international NGOs as well as bilateral and multilateral organizations to improve the functioning of NGOs in China with a focus on environmental protection and capacity building. The Badi Foundation looks forward to working with CANGO to further explore the process of building capacity in non-governmental development organizations in China.

The Badi Foundation was pleased to participate in the first “Child Poverty and Development Forum” organized by the Foreign Capital Project Management Center of the State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation (FCPMC) and UNICEF at Zhejiang University on May 26, 2011. The forum, which provided a space for different organizations and entities to share international and domestic research and experience on issues related to child poverty, was attended by representatives from the FCPMC, the National Working Committee on Children and Women, Ministry of Civil Affairs, Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Education, provincial Poverty Alleviation Bureaus, Zhejiang University, Beijing Normal University, experts in related fields and three international non-profit organizations, including the Badi Foundation. The Badi Foundation representatives learned a great deal from the presentations at the Forum and discussions with other participants.

Badi Foundation President Dr. Lori Noguchi shared a presentation at the Forum on the theme of releasing the potential of young people. Dr. Noguchi’s speech dealt with the experience of the Badi Foundation in carrying out the Junior Youth Empowerment Program, an English language and moral development program for youth aged 12 to 15, in China. The object of the Junior Youth Empowerment Program is to release the potential of junior youth to contribute to the development of their communities through enhancing their powers of expression in the English language and developing their moral capacities, including their ability to design and implement projects to serve their communities. In recent years, the Badi Foundation has been assisting community-based organizations operating in rural communities in China to implement the Junior Youth Empowerment Program.

As it is reported that China’s new stage of poverty alleviation work will further focus on the development of children and youth, the Badi Foundation is looking forward to collaborating with a variety of different organizations and agencies to contribute to the development and well being of China’s children and youth.

On April 27, 2011, the Badi Foundation was invited by the Foreign Capital Project Management Center of the State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation (FCPMC) to share a presentation on “The Evolution of International Development Thought”. Badi Foundation Executive Director Mr. Victor Ali, Chief Representative Mrs. Shareen Ahmed Farhad and seven other colleagues and about 40 of the Foreign Capital Project Management Center’s officials and workers attended the event. Mr. Ou Qingping, Director of FCPMC, hosted the event, and Badi Foundation Beijing Office Chief Representative, Mrs. Shareen Ahmed Farhad shared a presentation on the evolution of international development thought as well as some of the Badi Foundation’s experience working in the field of development in China.

The presentation was followed by a lively discussion touching on topics such as: the development of capacity in China’s rural populations, assessing the impact of development programs, fostering a collaborative relationship between NGOs and local authorities, and opportunities for international NGOs to participate in national issues such as poverty alleviation.

In 2006, the Badi Foundation and FCPMC launched a project together to enhance the capacity of rural women in Yilong, Sichuan Province and Tongchuan, Shaanxi Province, and are exploring opportunities for cooperation in new fields under the framework of China’s poverty alleviation strategy.
