The Badi Foundation is a non-profit, non-governmental development organization founded in 1990, headquartered in Macau and operating a representative office in Beijing. For the two decades that we have been working in China we have striven to contribute, through the design and implementation of education and training programs, to the goal of bringing about balanced development in the greater China region. We have had the privilege of working with a wide variety of government agencies and academic institutions in China in pursuit of this goal, including national, provincial and local Poverty Alleviation Bureaus, and provincial and local Women’s Federations. We have also had the opportunity to collaborate with international organizations such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations World Food Programme, and UNICEF in our efforts in China. The support and encouragement of these collaborators have contributed greatly to the development of the Foundation’s programs and to our understanding of the process of bringing about balanced development in China.
During our 20 years working in China, the Badi Foundation has sought, in partnership with our collaborators, to create and implement programs that release the vast potential of rural populations to contribute to the social and economic development of their communities. Drawing on this potential as well as the increasingly favorable environment for civil society in China, the Badi Foundation in 2005 launched a new program, the Institutional Capacity Building Program, aimed at encouraging the establishment of community-based organizations (“CBOs”) and building their institutional capacity to contribute to sustainable development in their own communities. Through a series of small-scale trainings and seminars, including participation by government agencies, the Badi Foundation identifies individuals from rural and semi-rural areas that are motivated by a desire to serve their communities, and provides them with the opportunity, training and seed funding to establish CBOs in their hometowns. The foundation then closely accompanies these organizations to collaborate together with local government agencies and academic institutions to implement either the Moral Empowerment through Language Program or the Environmental Action Program, two programs of the Badi Foundation with a proven impact on social and economic development. Badi Foundation staff develop curricula to train these agencies to enhance their institutional capacity and regularly provide on-site accompaniment to assist them in enhancing their capacity to effectively carry out their programs. In addition, the Badi Foundation holds periodic regional seminars where collaborating CBOs can come together to share their learning and experiences.
